"Outstanding idea, Russ," Kyna said. "Then we get to fight off this bogeyman and all of Bryan's goons at the same time. The people waiting to kill us will have to line up and take a number."
"Okay," Cyrus conceded, "dumb idea. We'll stay on the trip, but we dump the diamonds."
Kyna sighed. "Look, I know how you feel. But if we miss a delivery, telephones will start ringing in London and button men will start dropping out of the sky like paratroopers. We only have a couple more stops before Albuquerque. Let's just make the damned deliveries and then . . . Then you can turn into the wolfman and eat the prick a new asshole the second he sets foot in New Mexico."
Cyrus gave Paula an amused glance. She shrugged. He threw up his hands and said, "Sounds like a plan."
When Kyna went into the bathroom, Paula pulled Cyrus into the front of her shop.
"There's something I haven't told you," Paula whispered.
"Let me guessit's about your bill?"
Her grin was lopsided, but without amusement. "Keep it up. You're going to need that sense of humor. It's about your coming here."
"About Kazie?"
"Kazie was just the means. I saw your coming days ago."
"Oh?"
"Don't give me that look, it's true. For the past several days I've been plagued by these recurring visions. The reason I'm telling you this is because of what else I saw."
"More good news." Cyrus ran his fingers through his hair.
"I saw a man and a womanyou and Kyna. You were in a huge cavern surrounded by blackness. I saw a mountain and moonlight. . . ."
"What did the mountain look like?"
"Oh, I don't know. I remember it had a kind of odd-shaped crest."
"I've been having dreams about a mountain like that."
"What about the cave?"
